The Impact of CVD-Diabetes

In NZ alone, CVD is the leading cause of death accounting for 40% of all deaths annually (NZGG 2001 Chronic Care Management: Policy and Planning Guide). In NZ there are 115,000 people diagnosed diabetics, with another estimated 200,000 undiagnosed with diabetes. Reducing the incidence and impact of CVD and Diabetes are two of the main population health objectives described in the NZ Health Strategy and Maori Health Strategy.

These chronic conditions are significant on an International level. For instance, nearly a third of Americans, more than 73 million adults, have diabetes or higher-than-normal blood sugar levels with an estimated 8 million undiagnosed diabetics.

How PREDICT™ Works

PREDICT™ has been designed to make patient management efficient and sustainable by complementing and integrating with existing systems and coordinating varied knowledge sources. Eg. guidelines, tasks, patient information etc into a single system that delivers patient-specific advice at the point of care.

The application stores guideline information within a database that has been structured so that patient-specific risk assessment and clinical management recommendations can be returned in response to inputs of defined and relevant disease-specific variables.

Evidence and content in PREDICT™ can be quickly and easily updated if and when guideline updates occur, further enhancing the quality of best care for each individual patient. PREDICT™ in NZ uses current information on CVD and Diabetes from the New Zealand Guidelines Group (NZGG) which holds the most accurate evidence-based information on the subject.

PREDICT™ CVD-Diabetes is an intuitive system which is easy to use. Once integrated with any of the major Patient Management Systems (PMS), data is automatically pre-populated from the patient’s PMS medical record into PREDICT™. This reduces data entry burden and ensures the process is simple, quick and accurate. Risk assessment and management information from PREDICT™ is automatically saved back into the patient’s medical record.

This system represents a significant technological advance by using a scenario-based knowledge representation. Innovated by Enigma, this robust methodology models decision making by applying pattern-matching techniques to patient scenarios or states. Its advantages are speed, flexibility and simplified content management.
